Chapter 2: The Failing Heart

The Council chamber sat above the core bay, a circle of clear panels and careful light. Councilor Dax Ren listened while Kaito explained the decay trend, his voice clipped, his hands tight on the rail.

“How long?” Dax asked.

“Two cycles,” Kaito said. “Maybe less if we push the burn.”

Dax nodded once. “We will not alarm the ship.”

“The ship is already alarmed,” Kaito said. “It’s the core.”

Dax’s gaze moved to Mara, the youngest Wakekeeper in the room. “We have a plan,” he said. “Continuity. Digital transfer to a protected lattice in the spine. It preserves the mission without risking mass loss.”

Mara felt heat rise in her chest. “You mean we would die,” she said.

“We would be preserved,” Dax replied. “Mind and memory intact.”

“Without bodies,” Kaito said.

Dax did not answer. “We will brief the guilds tonight.”

After the meeting, Kaito led Mara back along the catwalk. Below them the core glowed, a contained storm.

“They’ve been preparing Continuity for years,” he said. “Because it’s clean. Because it lets them avoid a choice.”

“Is there another choice?” Mara asked.

Kaito hesitated. “There was. The founders built a reserve reactor. It’s buried. It hasn’t been touched in a century.”

Mara looked at him. “Why wasn’t it used?”

“Because lighting it means starving the ship for months,” he said. “Austerity to the edge of oxygen. People die if we misstep.”

Mara felt the ship’s hum in her bones. “If we do nothing, people die anyway.”

Kaito’s mouth twisted into something almost like a smile. “That’s why I need you.”

As they reached the ring, a message lit her console. Lysa Hale, Memory Keeper, requesting assistance in the archive.

Mara accepted. She did not yet know that the archive held a different kind of power.
