Chapter 1: The Night List

The Night Cycle began the way it always did: with names.

Mara Lin stood in the vault bay with a tablet in her hands, reading the list of sleepers as the pods closed. The list was longer than it had been ten years ago. It always was. The ship carried more bodies, more promises, more weight.

Across the bay, families pressed palms to the glass. A girl in a green scarf traced her father’s name, then turned away as the pod slid into place. The bay lights dimmed to the blue of sleep.

“By order of the Council,” the intercom said, “Night Cycle begins twelve days early.”

Mara felt the room tilt. Twelve days early meant less time to stabilize the pumps, less time to stock the caches, less time to check the seals twice. It meant danger.

She looked to the other Wakekeepers. There were nine of them this cycle, two less than last time. Their faces were drawn, their hands already chapped from the dry air of long watches.

When the last pod sealed, the bay fell silent. The ship’s lights stepped down sector by sector, like a hand lowering a blanket. The hum of the fusion core deepened, uneven as a tired heart.

Kaito Venn met Mara in the core bay. His hair was white; his movements were not. He pointed to the diagnostics without greeting.

“Variance is up three percent,” he said. “Coils are thinning.”

“Can we nurse it?” Mara asked.

“Only if the Council stops pretending,” Kaito said.

Mara listened to the core’s uneven pulse. She had never known the ship at full power. Her life had been counted in Night Cycles and lists. The ritual had always been burden, never choice.

Kaito touched her shoulder once. “I need you awake,” he said. “Not just on watch. Awake.”

She nodded. The Night Cycle had started early. The core was failing. The list of names felt heavier than any she had carried.
