Chapter 10: The New Covenant The reserve reactor lit with a sound that felt like dawn. The lights surged from red to white. Heat returned in a slow wave, creeping across the ring, waking the ship’s metal from its long shiver. People cried, then laughed, then sat down as if their bodies had remembered relief. The air thickened, rich enough to breathe without counting. Kaito sank onto the catwalk and let his head rest against the rail. “It’s alive,” he said. “It’s awake,” Mara replied. Conversion began with the dismantling of the engine housings into habitat frames. The spine’s empty sections became gardens, laboratories, homes. The ship did not stop so much as change shape. Councilor Dax addressed the ship that night. His voice was quiet. “We chose conversion,” he said. “We chose embodied life. The Wake Circle’s duty ends. There will be no more Night Cycles.” The Archivist spoke once, its voice soft and almost human. “I will record without smoothing,” it said. “The truth will be harder. It will be ours.” Lysa brought Mara a blank ledger. “Write it,” she said. Mara wrote the first line of the new covenant: We are the ship, and the ship is our home. We choose to live awake. Others added their names. The line of ink grew, a road of signatures. Outside the windows, the target world hung blue and distant. They would not land this generation, maybe not ever. But they had chosen a life that could reach it on their own terms. The Night List was retired. The Wake Circle dissolved. The ship’s hum settled into a steady, bright rhythm. Mara closed the ledger and listened to the sound of people moving through their new home.
